TMJ Dysfunction

The temporomandibular joint connects your jaw to the temporal bones of the skull and allows the jaw to move side-to-side and up-and-down so you can talk, chew and yawn. Problems with this joint are referred to as temporomandibular disorders or TMJ. There are several common explanations for TMJ which include:

Clenching or grinding of the teeth
Teeth alignment issues
Arthritis in the joints
Stress, which can cause you to tighten your face or jaw.

No matter the cause, Directions can help treat your TMJ through the use of manual therapy to increase movement and relieve pain in the joints and tissues. We’ll also work to stretch and strengthen the jaw to restore normal joint and muscle flexibility. Finally, we’ll teach you a set of exercises designed to address your individual TMJ difficulties in order to reinstate more natural, pain-free motion.
